get fit

happy Thursday everyone.  I posted in one of my first posts of 2016 about my weight loss goals for 2016.  I try not to fixate on a number but want to lose weight for my overall health and to lessen my risk factors as I approach age 30 (rolls eyes).  As a nurse I know our metabolisms slow significantly as we age.  As we become more sedentary we tend to spread out and weight accumulates in central areas.  Increases in belly fat are associated with risk factors such as being more likely to develop diabetes, high cholesterol and so on.  This is in addition to any genetic predisposition we have already working against us.

in addition to some pretty significant dietary modification we’ve adopted over the last several months in our home, both my husband and I have gotten more serious about making fitness a part of our daily routines.  We are all about setting a good example for our daughter so this is just one more way we are able to do so.

my current favorite meals center around the isagenix 30 day program I’m participating in- I haven’t seen much movement on the scale as of yet but we don’t own a scale so I don’t weigh daily.  my clothes fit better, and that’s always a good indicator that inches are dropping.

back to the meals-  I have an isa shake for breakfast.  an apple or a 100 calorie Greek yogurt for a midmorning snack.  for lunch I typically have a small grilled chicken breast and a spinach salad with all my favorite veggies.  balsamic is always my dressing of choice.  another 100 calorie mid afternoon snack and finally, an isa shake for dinner.  my favorite shake recipe is 1 scoop vanilla and 1 scoop chocolate, water and ice.  Blend in my handy blender and I’m ready to head out the door.  Sometimes instead of water I use a bit of coffee, especially when I’ve got to work so that the caffeine headache doesn’t slam me mid afternoon.  Although I’m not having any problems with the caffeine headaches anymore, I would prefer to not take the risk on days I’ve got to work!  These are my two favorite Greek yogurts 1. (endorsed by our Panther #CaMVP.  this yogurt is fairly low in calories and has no artificial sweeteners, in addition, it has 15 grams of protein- it’s my husbands go to for breakfast) and 2. (this one is my preference because it is only 100 calories making it the perfect snack without having to worry about going over.  also non-GMO ingredients are always a plus and my preferred dietary selections- I love the blueberry) our daughter loves both kinds!!  We do lean protein and lots of veggies.  We’ve cut out the majority of “junk food,” I still have a thing for chocolate chip cookies though!  We’re drinking half our body weight in ounces of water each day and we eliminated soda a long time ago.  Sometimes we sneak 1/2 sweet 1/2 unsweete team.

for working out- we’re getting cardio and weights in at the gym.  when I don’t make it to the gym I’ve been using the Seven Minute Workout App on my phone and doing 2 circuits of the full body workout.  It’s 12 exercises for 30 seconds each with a 10 second break between exercises- from planks, to wallsits, to push-ups this workout app hits all the major muscle groups and gets your heart a pumping (in just SEVEN minutes).  We also have a 10 pound dumbbell that I use to get in extra arm work and strengthen my core while doing so and I can do this stuff without leaving the house!!

So far so good!  I hope we can keep it up.  Our trip to Jamacia in April and our 5 year anniversary coming up in June def helps in the way of motivation!  What are some of your favorite healthy meals and workouts?  I would love to hear!

weekend recap

this weekend was fairly uneventful.  Saturday my parents came over and hung out.  we went shopping, had a few photos printed and just relaxed at our house.  after they left I decided to tackle painting our dining room.  I opted for sea salt from Sherwin Williams and I love the way it turned out

Now, I have to order some curtains and find the perfect fixture to replace the bleh builder grade one.

Sunday we had friends over and watched the Panthers game.  I’m so proud of our team.  I’m also really excited that the game next Sunday doesn’t start until 6:40.  I’m going to try to sneak away from work about 30 minutes early so I’m home for kick off.  We went to bed super early last night and today my sweet girl and I have been hanging out in our jams all day (as I try to find curtains).

Have a great week y’all!

5 on Friday

Happy Friday everyone!  Coming at you with five of my favorites from the week/year so far. without further adieu…

  1. this mascara is a must have for your beauty bag.  my dear best friend recommended it and I hesitated to buy it for quite some time.  but I finally did and I.Love.It.
  2.
these minnie jams on my princess. so so snuggly

  3. The CAROLINA PANTHERS no explaination is necessary but we are NFC South Champs for the THIRD year in a row!  I am so proud of our team!
  4. my new running shoes.  they pay tribute to my favorite team and they also are SO comfy.  I had eyeballed them numerous times but never pulled the trigger.  now that my husband and I are getting serious about the gym- it seemed like the perfect opportunity for some new sneaks!
  5. we are going here at the end of April.  my husbands company takes us somewhere every year; last year we went here– it was AMAZING, but we only went from early Friday through late Sunday.  this year we decided to extend our time (the rest of the company will leave late Sunday evening and we stay until THURSDAY).  I am stoked.  my parents have stayed at this resort twice and they love it.  I don’t want to wish away this cold weather- but can it be April!  one love, one heart ❤️

I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday and a great weekend.  I’m working today but look forward to enjoying the weekend with my hubby and little princess.  What are your plans for the weekend?

Casey

happy new year

Hey & Welcome,

I promise this year I am going to be better about blogging.  I got this fun planner for Christmas (thanks Hubby) and have plenty of places to write blog ideas and keep myself organized.  Stay tuned.

I figured I would start this year with blogging some goals for myself/our family for 2016.  Jason and I aren’t big on resolutions so to speak, but we do have a several goals as a couple and as a family that we want to accomplish this year.  Here goes nothing…

  1. Attend church regularly and get Rylee actively involved in the youth programs/activities at our new church.  My husband also plans to join the basketball team they have.
  2. Go to the gym/work out AT LEAST 3 times per week.  Ideally more, but I’m trying to be intentional about things and I don’t want to be unrealistic about this.
  3. Succeed at Isagenix.  I have pretty significant weight loss goals for myself for 2016- and I’m hoping this program will help jumpstart my success.  This isn’t just about weight loss for me but getting healthy and stronger.  It arrives TODAY!!!
  4. Get our new home decorated like we want it.  I lack a lot of inspiration and am not a great decision maker so anytime I have an idea, I talk myself out of it.  I’d like to paint a few rooms and be intentional about completing each room, one at a time.  Rylee’s room and bathroom are nearly complete, so they will be first on my list.  This weekend we are going to tidy up our garage and clear out our guest bedroom so that we can move toward getting it how we want it.
  5. Date my husband.  This one is very important to us and actually belongs at number 2, but I was on a roll with the fitness things.  Jason and I want to take AT LEAST one night a month and have a date night.
  6. Do more tot school activities with Rylee.  We already do a lot of things and the child loves to learn, I want to keep challenging her because she loves it.  Send any good ideas my way please.

Thats enough for now.  What are some of your 2016 goals?  I’d love to hear them.

Check back soon!

Happy 2016.

life lately.

Hi there everyone.  I’ve been MIA for the last several months.  We moved into our home and we’ve been trying to get settled ever since.  We spent the eight months we were building our home diligently trying to make thoughtful and purposeful purchases to fill up our extra space- we moved in and we still had space to fill.  It is most definitely a work in progress.  I have to hang curtains, find a perfect storage unit for behind our formal dining room table, the list goes on and on.  I’ve heard numerous people say you have to live in a home through all four seasons before it is anywhere close to where you want it to be.  So far our home has taken on a very coastal/rustic vibe.  We have lots of different wood colors, light furniture.  I want to keep the space very neutral and open feeling.  I will post photos soon.  There are still some things I want to get hung on the walls and  such before I show off all the work.

I also started a new job, and am so THRILLED to only be working 2.5 days a week.   As a mother, I feel it is vitally important to show Rylee the importance of women having responsibilities outside the home, but I also know that she is my most important responsibility and what a blessing that I get to be home with her far more than I work.  Also, when I do work- she is with my husbands mother, if this wasn’t the case- I wouldn’t work at all.  It just so happens that I find my career extremely rewarding as well as intellectually stimulating at the same time- it does my mind good to work that little bit of time that I do.  Now that I am back into more of swing of life, I plan on trying to update more.

See y’all soon!!

Casey

home update.

it has been quite some time since I blogged.  I’ve been very busy lately but I’d like to think life will start to slow down just a touch starting… Thursday!  Our beautiful home is complete and we close/move in on Thursday!

We’ve  been waiting on this very week since November when our first home sold in just five days and we had NO TIME to digest/pack/prepare.  I feel like I’ve been living at warp speed since.  I’m mentally exhausted and so grateful that we will have our own space again in a matter of five days.  We have lived in my husbands grandmothers home since December (she is in an assisted living facility) and I’m 2000% thankful we were able to do that but to say it hasn’t felt like home would be an understatement.  We’ve been together and that is truly all that matters but I’m thankful to be regaining a sense of stability and structure in all of our lives, especially Rylee’s.  Every time I look at our home I’m immensely thankful for all the Lord has done in our lives to get us to this point.  We are forever grateful.  Cheers to this new adventure and our beautiful new home.
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

home update.

so my husband and I are building a home.  framing is almost complete- the second story should go up this week.  here is a photo of the progress as of last Wednesday or Thursday!!!

framing and inloves
say hello to my dear in laws who we found surveying the scene when we drove up!!!  if all goes well we should be moving in by the first of August, but I’m not holding my breath!!!

all about me

a few random/fun/quirky facts about me.

1.  I am left handed

2.  Mexican is my absolute favorite food- I am down for Mexican or Tex/Mex or anything of the like ANYTIME.  The more sour cream the better 💁🏼

3.  While I have ZERO desire to be pregnant again right now, or in the near future- I would like to think my husband and I will welcome baby #2 someday.  My husband doesn’t want another child- or so he says right now anyway.

4.  For many years I dreamed of becoming a nurse practitioner | was accepted to Duke University’s nurse practitioner program last fall | paid the deposit | completed all the program registration requirements | made a list of pros/cons | decided it wasn’t for me | haven’t once regretted it

5.  After changing my mind about NP school- I believe nursing education is the direction in which my career is headed.  I’m stoked to have the chance to become a clinical instructor for nursing students in the near future.

6.  I have a thing for nice cars.

7.  My husband and I are currently living in his grandmothers home while we build our house.  I am usually a clean freak- but all of our stuff is in her garage and I lack the desire to stay on top of keeping the place clean.  It is so unlike me it is crazy.  I blame it on feeling out of sorts with us not having a true “home” at the present.  Soon, Casey.  Soon.

8.  I had our daughter just two days after my own birthday.  This means hubby has two girls who get to celebrate their birthdays almost the entire month of May.

9.  I went to culinary school for a year but I hate to cook.  Again I blame it on not having my own space to get motivated in.

10.  While I hope I never ever have to have surgery- the operating room is one of the coolest places to be in my opinion.  As an observer, obviously.  I love to learn.  Nerd status.

this

I’ve meant to blog again before now- just haven’t.  but- a friend from high school posted this on instagram earlier and wow.  it speaks volumes.  I believe in doing the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do.  people are going to think what they think regardless- so don’t be influenced.  do what feels right in your heart because that defines the true person you are not what others think of you.

Five on Friday

1.  first post.  I’ve tried this blogging thing several times- failed miserably and been bummed.  I follow several great blogs fairly regularly and enjoy them so I decided earlier this year I wanted to try again.  trying to pencil blog topics into my planner and be intentional about it.  we shall see.

2.  happy spring.  spring officially kicked off today.  I can’t wait for more consistent pretty weather.  I love those late in the day thunderstorms- I love to nap during them even more.  I do not love the pollen and allergy symptoms that accompany this time of year.  get your claritin/allegra/zyrtec and nasal sprays ready!

3.  off this weekend.  YES.  I somehow scheduled myself to work TWO weekends in a row.  Yuck.  I’m off four days during the week but having to be away from my husband and daughter two consecutive weekends wasn’t the best- tomorrow is supposed to be beautiful so we can play catch up.

4.  chipolte.  we have chipolte for dinner most Friday nights when I’ve worked.  it’s one of my absolute favorites!

5.  my patients.  were pretty darn great this week.  I’m loving the feeling of having a professional purpose again!  it’s truly a privilege to get to care for people who are not feeling their best!  so far I’m happy about the job change I made back in December!

Happy Spring & Happy Weekend

Casey!
